What you should know about laser hair removal before booking an appointment

1. What are the four phases of hair growth?

Hair growth is a dynamic process that occurs in four distinct phases, known as the hair growth cycle.

The first phase is the Anagen phase, which is the active growth phase. During this period, hair follicles are actively producing new hair cells.

The second phase is Catagen, a transitional phase that signals the end of active growth.

Next is the Telogen phase, often referred to as the resting phase, where no significant hair growth occurs. Finally, the Exogen phase is the shedding phase, where old hair is pushed out to make way for new growth. Approximately 50 to 150 hair strands are shed daily during this phase.

2. What phase of hair growth can be targeted through laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal primarily targets the Anagen phase of the hair growth cycle, which is the active growth phase. During this phase, the hair follicle is actively producing new hair cells, and the hair is attached to the root. The laser emits a concentrated beam of light that is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair, and this energy is converted into heat. The heat damages the hair follicle, inhibiting or delaying further hair growth. Since the Anagen phase is the phase when the hair is actively growing and connected to the follicle, it is the most effective stage for laser hair removal treatments.

3. What percentage of Hair is in the anagen phase and for how long?

The percentage of body hair in the Anagen phase and the duration of this phase can vary widely based on factors like genetics, age, and individual variations. On average:

  • Percentage of Body Hair in Anagen Phase: The percentage of body hair in the Anagen phase is generally lower than that of scalp hair. It's estimated that about 20-30% of body hair is in the Anagen phase at any given time. This percentage can vary among individuals and across different body areas.

  • Duration of Anagen Phase for Body Hair: The duration of the Anagen phase for body hair varies depending on the specific area. Typically, it ranges from a few weeks to a few months. For example:

    • Leg hair: Anagen phase can last around 2 to 3 months.

    • Arm hair: Anagen phase can last around 2 to 6 weeks.

    • Chest or back hair: Anagen phase can last around 1 to 6 months.

It's important to note that these are approximate estimates, and individual variations are significant. Genetics, hormonal factors, and age all play a role in determining the duration and percentage of body hair in the Anagen phase. Hair removal methods like waxing or laser hair removal are most effective when targeting hair in the Anagen phase, as it is actively growing and connected to the follicle.

4. Why do I need multiple hair removal sessions?

During each session, approximately 20-30% of the hair is in the Anagen phase and this is the only phase of hair growth where the follicle can be successfully targeted and destroyed.

We recommend purchasing a package of 6 laser hair removal sessions and doing sessions every 4 to 6 weeks.

5. Who is not a candidate for laser hair removal?

While laser hair removal is generally safe and effective for many people, there are certain individuals who may not be suitable candidates for this procedure due to various factors or contraindications. Here are some examples:

  • Pregnant Women: Laser hair removal is typically not recommended during pregnancy, as the effects of laser energy on fetal development are not well understood. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also affect hair growth, making the procedure less effective.

  • Individuals with Certain Medical Conditions: People with certain medical conditions or skin disorders may not be suitable candidates for laser hair removal. Conditions like lupus, psoriasis, eczema, and active skin infections can affect the safety and effectiveness of the procedure.

  • Tanned or Dark Skin: Laser hair removal is most effective on individuals with light skin and dark hair because the laser targets the contrast between the hair and skin colour. Tanned or dark skin can increase the risk of burns and pigmentation changes.

  • Blonde, Gray, or Red Hair: Laser hair removal is less effective on light-coloured or fine hair, as the laser may not effectively target the melanin in the hair follicle. People with blonde, gray, or red hair may not achieve the desired results.

  • Recent Sun Exposure: It's recommended to avoid sun exposure and tanning beds before laser hair removal, as tanned skin can increase the risk of side effects. Some clinics may require patients to wait until their skin has returned to its natural colour.

  • Use of Certain Medications: Some medications, such as isotretinoin (Accutane), can make the skin more sensitive to light and may need to be discontinued before undergoing laser hair removal.

  • History of Keloids or Hypertrophic Scarring: Individuals with a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring may be at an increased risk of developing scars or skin reactions after laser treatment.

6. Who are the best Candidates for Laser Hair Removal?

The best candidates for laser hair removal are typically individuals who meet certain criteria, as they are more likely to achieve safe and effective results. Ideal candidates typically have the following characteristics:

  • Light Skin and Dark Hair: Laser hair removal is most effective when there is a significant contrast between the colour of the hair and the colour of the skin. Light skin with dark hair provides the best contrast, allowing the laser to target the hair follicles more precisely.

  • Non-Tanned Skin: It's essential for candidates to have non-tanned skin before undergoing laser hair removal. Tanned or recently sun-exposed skin can increase the risk of side effects, such as burns and pigmentation changes.

  • Good General Health: Candidates should be in good overall health, without any active skin infections, skin disorders, or medical conditions that could interfere with the procedure.

  • Realistic Expectations: Candidates should have realistic expectations about the results of laser hair removal. While the treatment can significantly reduce hair growth, it may not achieve complete hair removal, and multiple sessions are often required.

  • Compliance with Treatment Schedule: Laser hair removal typically involves a series of sessions, often spaced a few weeks apart. Ideal candidates should be willing and able to commit to the recommended treatment schedule.

How do we price our hair removal?

We have identified areas of the body and categorized them based on size, to properly treat an area requires shots from the laser and each shot has a qualitative value. We use this value to determine how many shots each area requires based on the size.

Our pricing catalogue uses the description of XS (extra small), S (small), M (medium), L (large), XL (extra large), and Full body.

NOTE: any person whose area requires more shots of the lasers, than the range of the parameter, will be moved up to the next category.
